Parkwood/ColumbiaThe video vixen formerly known as “Superhead” has entered the “Becky” controversy with an unflinching essay about being the betrayed wife of a famous man, and also being the other woman.
Karrine Steffans, the best-selling author of the 2005 memoir Confessions of a Video Vixen – where she exposed her sexual exploits with a litany of notable men in R&B and hip-hop, has penned an eyebrow raising essay for Time Inc’s XOJane website.
In it, the three-time married estranged wife of troubled Scandal star Columbus Short offers revealing prose in direct response to the firestorm that has brewed surrounding Beyonce’s latest album Lemonade, and its songs about a cheating husband and the women who love him.
“As I watched Lemonade, I heard a wife, a Beyoncé, cry about a Becky,” Steffans wrote. “I listened to her wail on songs like “I Pray You Catch Me” and “Sandcastles,” and I resonated with how she felt as a woman who was promised forever and faithfulness only to have these notions dashed by a woman, or women — by “Becky with the good hair.”
“And I listened to a woman who seemingly has it all but is riddled with the same insecurities of a woman who has not nearly as much. I witnessed as she went through the same stages I’ve gone through and am still traversing through as a wife, and the stages I have contributed to as a Becky.”
Steffans, who has a son with old-school rapper Kool G. Rap, rehashed a story about how she performed three-minutes of oral sex with Jay-Z – long before he married Beyoncé – after meeting him on the set of a music video. She also talked about her six year affair with Wu-Tang Clan frontman Method Man, who was married with children.
“I am Becky with the good hair,’ the St. Vincent native proclaimed. “I am Beyonce?. I am the keeper of secrets, the betrayer of women, the confessor of my sins, the owner of my secrets, lies and salvations. I have traded in my Scarlet A for a Scarlet Bey.”
