R. Kelly Channels Al Green on Christmas Album

RCA RecordsR. Kelly pays tribute to two Rock and Roll Hall of Famers in his new original holiday album, 12 Nights of Christmas

“Yeah, Bill Withers, a little bit of Al Green,” the Pied Piper tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I tried to capture some of the legends in some type of way in the vocal arrangement and styles.”

Kelly finally released the album in October after working on it for a decade.

“Been doing a song or two every year,” he says. “I wanted to do all original songs and create a legacy as far as my Christmas music so for years to come, people would be playing it. The same thing Nat King Cole did and the greats before me that paved the way.”

Kelly kicked off his Christmas tour December 5 in Nashville, and it wraps up December 27 and December 28 in Atlanta. The show is a combination of his greatest hits and music from the Christmas set.

“I want people to know there’s more to R. Kelly than sex songs,” he says in describing his approach to his holiday concerts. “I love Christmas and I’m bringing fans for the first time into my living room to see how I get to have Christmas.”
