ABC/Richard HarbaughShe became a household name as a finalist on American Idol and later won an Academy Award for Dreamgirls, but Jennifer Hudson told Late Night host Seth Myers on Tuesday that her singing career had more humble beginnings — performing at drag clubs.
“I went in the club, and I’d notice, I’m like, ‘That’s a man dressed as a woman who is lip-synching?’ I’m a real girl and I sing for real, how about I come in here and take [their] money?’ And so that’s what I used to do…I had the whole glam squad, they were all drag queens. They would dress me up…do my costumes, and do my hair and make-up.”
Hudson’s looking to return to the club scene with JHUD, her brand new “mostly dance” album, which debuted Tuesday.
“It’s so much more fun,” she said of the project, which had her collaborating with producers like Pharrell Williams and Timbaland. “At my age, I feel like, on this album, expressing myself, and that’s why I called it JHUD: It represents my person, not so much ‘Jennifer Hudson’ the persona, but like the girl.”
On Late Night, Jennifer also performed “Dangerous,” the song that opens her third studio album.
