Voltron RecordzBack in 2013, Tyrese announced via his social networks that his upcoming album, Black Rose, will be his final solo effort. Now, the singer tells ABC Radio why he’s decided to make this next project his last music project.
“I knew it was going to be my last because you know I just landed 50/50 joint and legal custody of my angel and daddy duties are real,” Tyrese says of raising his seven-year-old daughter Shayla Somer Gibson.
The singer also notes that the climate of the music business made his decision even easier. “The state of the music industry is very different now, so we’ve seen some of the most successful, with some of the most incredible careers and millions and millions of records sold, come out and not do any real numbers,” Tyrese says. “So I’m like, you know what, if you want to lose your house, go ahead and stay in the business if you want to.”
Tyrese, who is the chairman and CEO of Voltron Entertainment, adds: “People are still winning and very successful in music but it’s a very different business right now, and if you have opportunities to do other things beyond music, then you’re going to do it.”
Luckily for fans, Black Rose is more than just an album — the set will include an audio book and a seven-part documentary, and its second single, “Shame,” will include a 23-minute film produced by Denzel Washington co-starring Jennifer Hudson.
“I felt like if it’s going to be my last solo album, then I wanted to leave the fans with more than enough content, because just dropping an album these days is pretty boring,” he says, “so I’m giving them more than enough to process and hold on to as I gracefully bow out.”
Black Rose will be Tyrese’s sixth studio effort, and follows up 2011’s Open Invitation and 2006’s Alter Ego.
It remains unclear if Tyrese will remain committed to any future projects with TGT — his R&B group with Tank and Ginuwine.
