Steven KleinWork work work work work! Rihanna is a model of warrior perfection on the cover of this year’s W magazine September issue.
Photographed by renowned photographer Steven Klein and styled by Edward Enninful, W‘s fashion and style director, the Bajan singer is portrayed as a “regal icon in war and peace,” sporting gold eye makeup and eyebrow jewelry, ruby-red gemstone-encrusted lips with a diamond in the middle, diamonds on her chin and a Cartier tiara, earrings, and necklace to finish the futuristic glam look. A second version of the cover shows Rihanna in a more subdued look with fewer diamonds.
“The thing about Rihanna is that she never wants to repeat something she’s done…instead, I wanted to do something that was set in the future world. We though, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to take this concept and apply it to the last woman on earth, the last warrior on earth, really?” said Enninful.
“Rihanna was very involved. With Rihanna, it’s always a collaboration and that’s why I love her so much. So I’ll send her ideas, she’ll bounce them back. I’ll send her one of the sketches and she’ll say ‘Oh I love it,’ or ‘I wish it was shorter.'”
Rih Rih’s cover story is inspired by the idea of transformation, which is the theme reflected throughout the entire magazine issue. Inside its pages, the beauty and other models are set in a dystopian world, with Rihanna starring as the lead woman warrior.
