Barrett, who was featured on ABC’s Greatest Hits in July performing his 2004 hit single “Let Me Love You”with Zendaya, is planning to release a new album, tentatively called Paradise Cove at the end of this year.
The singer believes this will be his most honest album to date because his music is offering a message. His new single “I Need More,” stands as a perfect example.
“‘I Need More’ is a record that’s got R&B-Hip Hop vibes to it, but definitely the message behind it is: this lifestyle, this thing that most entertainers, especially men call fun or success is very material driven,” Mario tells ABC Radio. “It doesn’t really fulfill you within when it comes to your foundation of who you are as individual.”
The singer-actor, who emerged with his 2002 hit “Just a Friend,” says he’s grown since his arrival in the industry as a teenager and hopes that those listening will learn that everything that glitters isn’t gold.
“I feel like this generation needs to know that everything that they see isn’t real. Everything that you are praising isn’t always what it seems to be and there’s much more to a person than houses, cars, women and parties,” Mario explains.
As he gears up for his new album, Barrett say being independent is liberating because he “can test the waters and do different things,” but he also realizes it’s the journey that counts.
“I’m just stepping more into that true artist place where I feel like I’m really about to blossom as a creative individual,” he says.
