Dennis LeupoldThe Philadelphia 76ers have issued an apology, following Sevyn Streeter‘s claims that she was barred from singing the national anthem before Wednesday’s basketball game between the Sixers and Oklahoma Thunder.
According to WPVI-TV in Philadelphia, the letter begins by stating, “We are sorry that this happened. After receiving feedback from our players, basketball operations staff and ownership group, we believe that the wrong decision was made, and Sevyn should have been welcome to sing.”
The letter also states that the basketball organization has offered Sevyn the opportunity to “perform at a game of her choice” and are waiting for her response.
Sevyn posted a video on her Twitter account Wednesday, telling fans that she was no longer allowed to perform the national anthem that evening, due to wearing a “We Matter” jersey.
The vocalist allegedly was offered a 76ers jersey to wear instead, but she declined. A dancer from the 76ers Dance Team was picked to sing the anthem in Streeter’s place.
A source told WPVI that Sevyn “was hired under a contract that does not allow the performer to use the team to further a personal agenda: political, social or commercial.”
