Trey Songz gets plea bargain offer in Detroit police assault case

James DimmockTrey Songz has been offered a plea deal in a case in Detroit in which the singer is accused of punching a police officer.

The Detroit Free Press reports that the plea offer was made at a Friday court hearing in Detroit.

The deal, which Trey has not yet accepted, would allow him to plead guilty to resisting and obstructing a police officer and to aggravated assault instead of the felony count of assaulting a police officer and the one count of misdemeanor aggravated assault which he currently faces.  Those charges carry a maximum penalty of a year in jail, the paper reports. Songz has pleaded not guilty in the case.  Under the terms of the deal he also would face drug and alcohol screening and have to take part in anger management counseling. He was not in court on Friday but appeared for via video conference.

The charges stem from an incident at a concert in December in which Songz allegedly became angered when his show was cut off after it ran past its allotted time. Trey reportedly threw things from the stage and officials charge that when police went back stage to arrest him, Trey punched a policeman in the head causing a concussion.

“We just got the offer today,” said Charles Longstreet II, one of Trey’s lawyers.  A conference in the case is schedule for March 10.
