“Own the frizz, own the braces, own the glasses”: Tinashe shares the beauty advice she'd give her younger self in “Glamour”

Petra CollinsGlamour magazine asked 39 female celebrities, including sultry vocalist Tinashe, what beauty means to them in 2017.

The “Superlove” singer shares in the publication’s April issue that if she could talk to her 13-year-old self about her looks, she would say “own it.”

“I didn’t give a s*** what I looked like so I looked really crazy. Own the curls, own the frizz, own the braces, own the glasses. Keep that attitude throughout your adulthood,” she says.

As for her thoughts on what society deems as beautiful, the singer reflects on what it meant to grow up as a black woman who “felt very isolated” by her hair.

She adds, “I love that we’re getting back to loving natural beauty. It’s important to embrace our natural selves. Especially as black women, I think it’s important to embrace natural hair.”

And like Baz Luhrmann‘s 1999 hit song, “Everybody’s Free to Wear Sunscreen,” Tinashe is an advocate for the use of skin protectant on a consistent basis.

“Always wear sunscreen, because [beauty] starts with your skin. It’s also a good moisturizer,” she says.

The April issue of Glamour hits national newsstands March 14.
