Following his success as a producer of the Oscar-nominated Straight Outta Compton N.W.A. biopic, Dr. Dre is now developing a movie about the late Marvin Gaye.

Dre has also acquired the rights to use Gaye’s music in the film, Variety reports.

One of Motown’s greatest stars, Gaye was fatally shot in 1984 at age 44 by his father following a family dispute in their Los Angeles home. His numerous honors include induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Gaye also won two Grammys in 1983 for his single “Sexual Healing”: Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Instrumental Performance.

There have been several failed attempts to produce films about Gaye. Nearly two years ago, his former wife, Janis Gaye, and his children NonaMarvin III and Frankie Gaye, announced that they were developing a documentary called “Marvin, What’s Going On?” That project doesn’t yet have a release date. .
