Gus Stewart/RedfernsAs her breakout hit “Boo’d Up” remains at the top of the Billboard Hot R&B songs chartElla Mai says she’s been pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming response to her upcoming Boo’d Up tour.

“We sold out in 24 hours, and I couldn’t believe it,” Mai tells Billboard. “I was just like, ‘Wow.’ I’m really big on vibes, and I just want everyone to come and have a great time and spread love wherever we are.”

Mai’s 15-city Boo’d Up tour off kicks August 6 in Dallas, and continues through August 28 in Seattle. Tour stops include Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago, and New York City. This will be her first headlining tour after opening for Kehlani on her SweetSexySavage trek last year.

Mai sang “Boo’d Up” Sunday at the BET Awards, and she’ll also perform at the Essence Festival on July 7 in New Orleans.

The 23-year-old singer was discovered by Mustard after he heard her music online, and he produced her three EPs. Her third EP, Ready, released in 2017, includes “Boo’d Up,” which she co-wrote.  Mai is currently working with Mustard on her debut full length album, and she says they’ve developed a strong personal and professional bond.

“It’s deeper than the music when it comes to me and Mustard,” Mai says. “He’s like a big brother, and I’m so thankful to have a mentor like him to advise me.”

Mai also loves that the producer is always open to her input in the studio.

“It’s so cool that it’s always a collaborative effort,” she says. “He never makes me feel pressured or anything. He’s amazing.”
