Def Jam/Universal MusicJhene Aiko has gifted fans with an emotional new ballad titled “Triggered.”
Wednesday morning, the L.A. songstress dropped off the freestyle via social media, along with a note which shared a bit of insight into what spawned the single.
“One night I was so deep in my feelings, I was afraid of what I might do,” Aiko tweeted. “I didn’t want to revert to the same bad habits that have set me back time and time again.”
She continued, “I realized that instead of running away from my emotions… I needed to sit with them, express myself and say whatever came to mind. It was healing to say the least… and now I feel a bit more free.”
The record arrives nearly one month after Aiko shared a heartfelt message to ex-boyfriend Big Sean on Instagram. In the post, the singer has mentioned her love for the rapper and how he tends to “trigger” her emotions.
“While we’re both still on this planet I just want to say… I love you beyond measure,” the Trip artist wrote to Sean. “Even tho I get big mad and u trigger the f*** out of me. U make me feel. And I appreciate that. Because I thought I was dead inside.”
Aiko is reportedly working on even more new music, which she delayed following the tragic passing of close friend and collaborator Nipsey Hussle.
