Jackée Harry says her “227” co-star Regina King is “like a young Katharine Hepburn”: “She gets better and better”

ABC/Eric McCandlessAhead of her upcoming Lifetime film, Pride & Prejudice: Atlanta, legendary sitcom actress Jackée Harry is reflecting on some of her longstanding Hollywood friendships.

One of Harry’s first major gigs was playing the feisty-but-kindhearted neighbor Sandra Clark on the popular 1980s sitcom 227. On the show, Harry’s character became like a big sister to her neighbor’s daughter Brenda, played by the incomparable Regina King. When asked about their three decades-old relationship, Harry tells ABC Radio that she’s proud of the Oscar-winning actress.

“And she’s not finished,” Harry says, referring to King’s Best Supporting Oscar win for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk.

“She’s going to win a Best Actress Oscar, eventually,” Harry predicts. “She’s all that and a bag of chips, all day long. But she’s also a decent human being. And you can see it, she’s real in her acting. But she’s different each time…she gets better and better.”

Although Harry has seen King’s rise and growth over the years as an actress, the 227 alum says she’s still amazed by King’s stunning talent.

“I mean, I don’t know how she does it,” Harry continues. “Every time you see her, you just love her and you can’t deny her. You know, she’s sort of like a young Katharine Hepburn or something. I can’t even…I don’t know what she is, because she’s still growing. And you just want to see more of her.”

Pride & Prejudice: Atlanta, also starring Tiffany Hines, Juan Antonio and Reginald VelJohnson, airs Saturday, June 1 at 8 p.m. ET on Lifetime.
