Loretta Devine is taking on a challenging role in the new Netflix comedy series, Family Reunion.
Devine, who stars as M’Dear, the matriarch of the McKellan family in the series, says playing the strict yet rambunctious character was something she wasn’t initially prepared for — but later thoroughly enjoyed.
“The show came with an incredible challenges for me,” Devine tells ABC Radio. “I’ve done a lot of work on a lot of different things, but this is a grandmother that can play basketball, can jump major fences, turn hurdles.”
“I mean, this woman is the real deal. She’s almost like a superhero on some level,” she continues. “So that was a lot of energies for me.”
Family Reunion, which also stars Richard Roundtree as Jeb, a local Georgia pastor, follows the Seattle-based McKellan family who, after a family reunion, decides to move to the South for a simpler life.
Devine says it’s a blessing to be a part of such a fun and dynamic series that offers so much to her audience.
“That’s like a dream right there,” she says.
Family Reunion, also starring Tia Mowry, Telma Hopkins and Anthony Alabi, is now streaming on Netflix.
