Mama knows best: Johnny Gill’s mother predicted “Soul of a Woman” would be a hit

J Skillz EntertainmentEarlier this year, Johnny Gill hit number one on the Billboard Adult R&B chart with “Soul of a Woman,” and appropriately, he says it was a woman — his mother — who predicted the song’s success.

The New Edition member recorded the track five years ago, but had not released it. When his mom listened to the song, she knew it was a hit, and inspired him to include it on his latest album, Game Changer 2.

“She heard that song and she was just like, ‘Yeah!,’ and the next thing you know she’s singing it,” Gill tells ABC Audio.

He adds, “She says, ‘It’s gonna be really successful,’ and I was like, ‘Really?’ And you know, I chose that as the first single, and sure enough, it went straight to the top of the charts.”

The two-time Soul Train Award winner says the track is a tribute to female empowerment.

“With that song, you’re talking about how we ride on the strength of so many women’s shoulders and it’s a reminder for all of us, reminding women that they’re powerful and they have a voice and it is time to be heard,” Johnny says.

Gill has followed up “Soul of a Woman” with his new single, “Perfect,” featuring another remember of New Edition, Ralph Tresvant. Ralph is signed to Johnny’s J Skillz music label, and they just announced their first show together as solo artists: March 7, 2020 at the MGM National Harbor in National Harbor, Maryland.
