GOOD/Sony Urban/ColumbiaOver the weekend, John Legend had two occasions to celebrate: His 41st birthday was on Saturday, but so was the 15th anniversary of the release of his debut album, Get Lifted.
In an Instagram post, John posted a photo of the album cover, and wrote, “15 years ago, we released my debut major label album #GetLifted on GOOD/Columbia Records. Thanks to everyone who has been with me on this amazing journey ever since.”
“I always had big dreams for my life as a musician,” John noted. “Even when I was a young kid watching the Grammys and Star Search and Soul Train, I wanted to be on those stages. When my parents played albums on their record player, I dreamed of the day when I would make my own records. But you never know if it’s all going to happen.”
John goes on to say that his “biggest hopes and dreams have been exceeded by reality,” adding, “I’m so grateful to everyone who has been a part of it. So much of it started with #GetLifted…Thanks for believing in me before everyone else. Thanks for helping to shape my sound and helping to introduce me to the world. Love you all.”
Legend also gave special thanks to his collaborators on the album: Kanye West, will.i.am, producer and songwriter Dave Tozer, and producer and songwriter Devo Springsteen, who also signed John to the GOOD label.
On Twitter, John added, “I’m so grateful for everything that has happened since. What a gift it has been to live my dreams every single day. Thank you all!“
Meanwhile, John and his family, who celebrated Christmas in Wyoming, have decamped for someplace warmer: He posted a picture of himself in the ocean with daughter Luna and son Miles.
