Image Courtesy BET/CentricThis year’s Soul Train awards, which was taped in Las Vegas on Friday, had a little something for every generation. Hosted by television talk show host Wendy Williams, the show opened with R&B superstar Chris Brown, who had seven award nominations. He performed a medley of hits, including “Yo, (Excuse Me Miss”), New Flame” and “Loyal”–which won for Best Hip Hop Song and Best Collaboration, according to Billboard.
Singer-songwriter Tinashe performed her hit “2 On,” Nico & Vinz went home with a “Best New Artist” award and We Are Toonz showed the old-heads how to do the Nae Nae dance.
But really, it was the 40-somethings that stole the show. This year’s awards show belonged to people groomed on ’90s R&B and hip-hop.
The show featured a reunion of the New Jack Swing and R&B group, Jodeci, who haven’t been on stage since 2006. The North Carolina quartet performed their sensual hits, “Freek’n You,” “Come & Talk to Me,” “Stay,” and “Forever My Lady.” During their performance Jo-Jo slipped and fell in the middle of a song, but never missed a note, according to theybf.com. The group also debuted their new single “Nobody Wins” featuring B.o.B.
The 70’s funk and soul group Kool & the Gang, was honored with the Legend Award and received a star-studded tribute from Tamar Braxton, Joe, Elle Varner, MC Lyte, Doug E. Fresh, Tank and Ma$e.
The high energy closer featured Lil’ Kim, Missy Elliott and Da Brat. They had the crowd on their feet when they performed their 1996 single “Not Tonight” which sampled Kool and the Gang. The single originally appeared on Lil’ Kim’s debut album, Hard Core, and featured rhymes by the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes of TLC. Lopes was also honored during the tribute, as her verse was displayed on video. Former Bad Boy label group Total and Lady of Rage joined them. Lil’ Kim threw in the Schmoney Dance to get young folks on their feet. And there was much talk throughout the night about Missy Elliott’s stunning 30-pound weight loss, reports Us Weekly.
Other superstars who came of age in the ’90’s like boxer Floyd Mayweather and Mike Tyson, MC Lyte, Joe, Faith Evans and Boris Kodjoe were on hand to deliver the trophies.
Another R&B veteran, Stephanie Mills, brought down the house when she sang “Home.”
This year’s Soul Train awards is set to air on November 30 on BET’s Centric channel.
