TLC has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund their fifth and final album, due out later this year. Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas announced the news via Twitter on Monday, and revealed they are calling on fans to help with the goal of raising $150,000 in the next 30 days.
“The whole idea is to record an album and be creative with an album and have our fans involved,” Chili tells ABC News Radio. “We’ve always worked with our fans through the years — we’ve had their names inside of the Fanmail CD, but this time its really hands on. They really have a big voice in what goes on the album and how things look and stuff like that and they really have a lot of great ideas to be honest with you. A lot of them are very creative so we can’t wait to collaborate with them.”
“This is nothing new for us to try something out of the box, that’s totally TLC,” T-Boz adds. “I’m always going to go against the grain.”
The duo also revealed that they are thinking of new ways to add their late group member, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, to the upcoming set.
“We do have an idea, a very creative idea that we’re talking about — it’s not confirmed, but in a way to incorporate her on the album possibly, but she always lives on through us and we wouldn’t have it any other way,” Chili explains.
Although they’re only in the beginning stages of recording, the pair already are starting to feel the pressure of making sure their final effort is timeless.
“I just want to make a good, great, classic TLC album and that’s scary. We get nervous every time.” says T-Boz.
When asked if this is really is final project that TLC fans will ever get, T-Boz says, “As of right this moment [yes], but I mean if something was to come up it would have to be phenomenal. You just never know what the future holds, I don’t never like to say ever, ever, ever… but as of right now that’s the way it is.”
For any fans looking to donate, TLC is offering various incentives including a TLC digital scrapbook, autographed lyrics, slumber party, photo shoot and listening party. So far, they’ve raised more than 27,000 dollars.
