India.Arie says a conversation with Oprah Winfrey inspired the title of her new album, 'Worthy'

Nearly two decades after making her debut, India.Arie has returned to gift fans with her eighth studio album, Worthy — a title the singer says was inspired by a fateful conversation with Oprah Winfrey.

Back in 2013, Arie was featured on the media mogul’s popular Super Soul Sunday series.  After her conversation with Winfrey, India tells ABC Radio she made a decision to be more conscious of her value and self-worth.

“One of the things she asked me was: ‘Well, how long has unworthiness been your calling card?’ I kind of looked in the air and looked around like, ‘I’m not sure if I think that’s true,” Arie says.  “But, that gave me pause.”

She continues: “So, I just tell my stories and I hope that someone will take the journey with me and that they’ll get what they need.  For the album Worthy, all the songs are either implicitly or explicitly imbued with that energy.”

The 16-track project is filled with songs about empowerment, compassion and — most importantly — self-love. The album’s lead single, “That Magic,” has already earned Arie a top-10 hit on the Billboard Adult R&B chart

Worthy is now available via the usual streaming services.
