Atria BooksChristmas is gospel star Erica Campbell’s favorite time of the year, but it does pose a dilemma: It seems each of her three children want their own Christmas tree.
Her oldest child, 15-year old Krista Nicole, always had her own tree growing up, so her younger brother and sister, Warryn III and Zaya Monique, expect the same privilege. Erica loves creating a special holiday atmosphere for her children, but she has to put her foot down about having multiple trees.
“Decorating the house is a must for my little ones,” the “All of My Life” singer tells ABC Audio. “When Krista was the only child, we’d have two trees. I have three children now and they all want their own tree. I go, ‘Guys, this tradition has died. We’re going to do one tree. We’re not going to do four trees in this house, O.K.” That’s a little chaotic.'”
Decorating headaches aside, Erica and her husband, producer Warryn Campbell, live in Los Angeles, where they always look forward to a blessed celebration on December 25.
“We have Christmas breakfast. It was my husband’s family tradition that we all kind of adopted, and it’s really great to wake up Christmas morning,” she says. “We pray and we open gifts and eat breakfast and then we travel around the city.”
That’s part of a tradition she calls “the traveling spoon.”
“You take your spoon and go eat at everybody’s house,” Erica continues. “Sometimes my house is the one that everyone travels to, and so clean-up the next day is pretty insane, but I love, love holiday time.”
On the music front, it’s been over four years since the Mary Mary singer released her second solo album, Help 2.0, but she says she’s currently working on the follow-up.
