ESSENCEEssence‘s third annual street style block party brought out the crème de la crème of Hollywood celebrities and fashion followers to Brooklyn Sunday, including Kelly Rowland and Zendaya. Essence beauty editor Nykia Spradley stated that everyone comes dressed to impress.
“I think that it just brings out the absolute best of street style,” said Spradley.
“I think that everyone comes out like decked out in their best street style looks and we’re doing…we do our street style fashion show, which was basically where our fashion team is scouting from the crowd. So they’re going around just picking out the looks that stand out and then we’re gonna do a fashion show at the end of the day.”
The event also introduced onlookers to Afrobeat singer Ayo Jay, who explained more about the musical genre.
“I’m an Afrobeats musician, so what I infuse a lot of other genre of like pop music, rap, trap, house and all that stuff, ‘cause I’m trying to be the face of Afrobeats here in America and for you to do that you have to infuse other genres that people out here are familiar with. And that’s what I’m trying to do out here,” said Jay.
Power actress Naturi Naughton, who hosted the block party’s fashion show, talked about the event’s importance for street style fashion and black culture.
“Oh my gosh. It’s been amazing. I mean, it’s great to see all these beautiful people here in Brooklyn, celebrating street style, celebrating all the different ways we express ourselves, especially as black people, and in this culture,” said Naughton.
“Essence always celebrates us and I’m excited to be at this block party and I got to host a fashion show. I got to twirl a little bit. So I’m having a good time.”
