Jose CardozaSoul singer MAJOR. had ambitions for his breakout hit “Why I Love You,” beyond merely writing a love song.
“I wanted to give the world a blueprint of what love requires and what love is to expect,” the Houston native tells ABC Radio. “Because I think at the end of the day we have enough one-sided love songs.”
Surely, the hit track is a testament to MAJOR.’s talent. But he recalls being told that he was “too polished” while auditioning for Randy Jackson, Simon Cowell, Kara Dioguardi and guest judge Avril Lavigne during the ninth season of American Idol, an assessment that caught the recording artist off-guard.
“I remember auditioning for American Idol. And I made it all the way to the… right before Hollywood. And I was told that I was too polished for the show,” remembers MAJOR.
“It was a little weird. I didn’t understand it and I probably, they’d probably bark at me for saying it. But anyway, I just… I remembered that statement. And they’re like, ‘This isn’t for you,'” he recalls.
Still, in a strange turn of events, MAJOR. found a career connection to the now-defunct television series — as the vocal producer for American Idol runner-up La’Porsha Renae, who MAJOR. believes is a superstar in the making.
“She’s amazing. I literally believe if she works this right, she could very well be a legend,” says MAJOR.
“Her sound, her story, her overcoming what she’s been through — when I tell you the stuff she’s been through, is what twenty women can’t compete with. From the dark places. And she’s just this light.”
MAJOR.’s debut album, I Am Major., is available for purchase now.
