K. Michelle Lost Sleep Picking New Album's Lead Single, “Love Em All”

K. Michelle faced a dilemma in choosing the perfect lead from her upcoming album. The singer reveals that selecting the best offering caused her to lose sleep, especially since the song she finally chose — “Love ‘Em All” — is a rock-inspired ballad unlike anything she’s ever recorded before.

“We’ve had some sleepless nights,” she tells ABC News Radio. “It’s a very scary thing, because you know being an African-American woman, it’s very difficult to get to the other side, you know, and it’s a fight that you have to [take on], but if you believe in the music, you have to believe that the music will knock down the doors.”

But she says the song’s sound reflects exactly the blend she was looking for. “I’ve wanted to hear, like, rock and roll, but I wanted it to have an R&B groove. I just wanted it to feel like a buffet of music in one song, and that’s how it came about,” Michelle says.

She also took inspiration for the song’s message from Chris Brown‘s “Loyal,” which is all about breaking a man’s heart. “I was just feeling, after listening to Chris Brown’s ‘Loyal,’ I was feeling, you know, a type of way, so I wanted to say something for the women,” she says.

“Love ‘Em All” is available now. The song will appear on the forthcoming follow-up to last year’s Rebellious Soul.
